|
The Sherwin Alumina Plant opened in early 1953 following two years of construction by Reynolds Metals Company. At that time, the plant was approximately 20% of its present size and produced about 1,000 metric tons of alumina per day, all of which was utilized locally by the plant’s companion, the Reynolds San Patricio Reduction Plant. Today, the plant has a capacity in excess of 4,350 metric tons of alumina products per day, 90% of which are exported. Since 1990, more than $75 million has been invested in modernizing the Sherwin Plant. The Sherwin Alumina plant employs approximately 725 people who operate and maintain the plant. Additional personnel, employed by contractors, are utilized for construction, modernization and special projects. Sherwin Alumina has an annual payroll of more than $31 million, annually makes more than $200 million in local purchases and pays more than $3.7 million in local school and property taxes. The Sherwin Alumina plant is a bauxite refinery producing metallurgical grade alumina and alumina hydrates from bauxite ore. All of the plant’s bauxite, approximately 3.5 million metric tons per year, is imported through the Port of Corpus Christi from foreign sources. Approximately 90% of the plant’s production is metallurgical grade alumina which is exported to aluminum reduction plants (smelters) for conversion into aluminum metal. The remaining production is chemical grade alumina hydrates which are used domestically in the manufacture of detergents, pharmaceuticals, plastics, abrasives, fire retardants, paints, water treatment chemicals and cosmetics. The plant is capable of producing 1.65 million metric tons of products per year. Sherwin Alumina recently received the U. S. Department of Energy’s Energy Leadership Award.
