THE ACADEMIES AT FOY H. MOODY HIGH SCHOOL
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
 
Overview
 
In the school year 2000-2001, Foy H. Moody implemented an academy program with the creation of the Academy for Health Science. The Academy for Health Science is a magnet school within the Corpus Christi Independent School District. The Academy for Health Science is an application only program which accepts qualifying students living within the School District. In the school year 2005-2006, Foy H. Moody High School implemented four new academies – allowing all students within the Moody High School attendance zone to select a career and /or college interest that meets his or her needs. The primary purposes of Academy implementation are as follows:
 
  • To provide smaller learning environments so that all students, to the greatest possible extent, will take core-curricular courses with the same groups of students.
  • To personalize the teaching/learning process for students and for teachers.
  • To provide students with a relevant high school experience that establishes a clear purpose for the student and parent throughout the four years of study.
  • To structure an educational program for each student to meet his/her needs and interests.

Curriculum
 
Each student is required to study the same core-curriculum leading to graduation requirements. Each academy contains specialized elective courses designed to further the student’s education tailored to that student’s interests. Academic teachers within an academy work closely with the elective, or “specialty,” teachers within their respective academies. Academy teacher teams find common elements between their curricula, and support one another by sharing teaching method ideas and by creating a connection between their class and other classes in which a student is enrolled. Academy partners (business/industrial/education) are called upon to work with teachers and students in order to emphasize the importance of professional skills required in real-world work situations.
