Texas A&M Univeristy - Corpus Christi is one of the state's fastest growing four-year universities and the only university in America located on its very own island. Its palm tree-lined campus is surrounded by natural wetlands and the newly restored beach across from campus provides a "live" on-site laboratory for measuring coastal processes.

First year students benefit from the unique learning communities program. Recognized as a national model, the program helps students connect with other students and small learning groups by providing links between their classes and subjects.

At the forefront of education is the Early Childhood Development Center on campus, a collaborative effort between the University and Corpus Christi ISD. The center serves 132 children age three through third grade, providing opportunities for child development research, observation on how children learn best and the development of improved teaching techniques.

The Craft Training Center of the Coastal Bend (CTCCB) is a non-profit organization. Corpus Christi industrial owners and contractors are working together to solve the growing manpower shortages facing the South Texas construction industry.

Nationally, the shortage of skilled workers is a problem growing at an alarming rate. This problem affects every contractor's ability to stay competitive, decrease the number of reportable incidents, and complete projects efficiently.

In 1987, the local industry owners, represented by The Coastal Bend Business Roundtable (CBBR), and contractors, represented by The Associated Builders & Contractors, Texas Coastal Bend Chapter (ABC), addressed the problem and developed The ABC Merit Shop Training Program, Inc. to help alleviate manpower shortages. In 1997, our name changed to ABC Merit Shop Training Program, Inc., dba The Craft Training Center of the Coastal Bend.

The Craft Training Center of the Coastal Bend provides task-oriented modular-based training to employees of local industrial owners and contractors by utilizing Contren® curricula developed by The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). This training is offered through our 4-Year Electrical and 3-Year Insulating Apprenticeship programs and our Craft Training Programs, which include courses in Pipefitting, Welding and Instrument Fitter. The Upgrade Training Program is flexible and can be customized to meet the needs of each individual company.

Craft Training Programs are designed to provide the related technical knowledge and entry-level skills in a particular trade.  Individuals currently working in the construction trades as helpers or those unemployed are encouraged to enroll.  In addition to the technical information, safety, mathematics and people skills are stressed continuously throughout the training program.

Classes are currently offered in the following Craft Areas:

Instrument Fitter
Pipefitter
Industrial Welding

The Upgrade Skills Training Program is designed to provide training to industrial owners and contractors located in the Corpus Christi area. Training is customizable to meet the needs of each owner or contractor.

The Program is available to participating owners and contractors working in the owner's facilities.  The training can be conducted at the industrial owner's facility, a contractor's facility or the Craft Training Center.
